When Worry Feels Too Big for a Kid

Most kids worry sometimes—about a test, a sleepover, a strange noise at night. But when that worry sticks around, gets in the way of school, friendships, or even sleep, it might be something more. Anxiety doesn’t always look the way people expect. Some kids get stomachaches before school. Others suddenly refuse to go places they used to love. Some get angry or shut down completely.

It’s not about being dramatic or challenging. It’s about a young nervous system that’s sounding alarms, even when everything seems fine on the outside. And for kids, explaining what’s wrong isn’t always easy.

What Support Can Look Like

At Suffolk Counseling Services, we work with children in ways that make sense to them. That might mean drawing, storytelling, or just giving them space to say how they really feel, without fear of getting in trouble or being misunderstood.

Through counseling, children can learn how to recognize anxious thoughts without being overwhelmed by them. They learn tools for calming their bodies, navigating difficult moments, and feeling more in control. Over time, things that once felt impossible start to feel manageable.

And we don’t leave parents out of the picture. We help families understand what anxiety looks like for their child and how to respond in ways that build trust and confidence, not just temporary relief.

If your child is struggling with worry that won’t go away, it’s okay to reach out. You’re not overreacting. You’re taking a step toward helping them feel safe in their own mind.
