Are Stress and Anxiety the Same?

Stress and anxiety are often confused. While they are very closely related, each possesses unique characteristics.

What Is Stress?

Stress is typically a physiological response to an external pressure or demand and may fade away once the situation has passed. Some common causes of stress include:

  • Work deadlines
  • Exams
  • Relationship conflicts
  • Financial problems

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is typically an internal reaction correlating with feelings of worry, fear, or unease. Unlike stress, anxiety may be persistent and irrational, causing excessive worry about potential threats that may never come to fruition. Additionally, anxiety generally lasts longer than stress.
