Signs of Anxiety in Children That Parents Often Miss

Many people assume that anxiety presents itself as outward worrying or constant stressing. However, anxiety manifests in a variety of behaviors, and we may not even think to associate some of them with the condition.

This makes it easy for parents to miss signs of anxiety in their children or misinterpret their behavior as something else. Here are just a few common signs of anxiety that parents tend to overlook.

Physical Symptoms

Even though anxiety is more of a mental health struggle, that doesn’t mean that it can’t manifest into physical symptoms. Children who have anxiety may also demonstrate physical symptoms, including:

  • Stomachaches
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Shaky Hands

Even if children are not physically ill, their symptoms are very real. If they are experiencing these symptoms often, they may not just be trying to skip school. There may be some more serious mental health concerns that need attention.

Irrability or Anger

Anxiety doesn’t always show up as fear. It can show up as frustration. Children who have short tempers, frequent tantrums, or overreact to minor inconveniences may be brushed off as just angry or difficult. However, this is a tell-tale sign of anxiety parents should make note of so they can help their kids rather than punish them.

Difficulty Concentrating

Difficulty concentrating is a common symptom of ADHD. However, ADHD and anxiety are often linked. 50% of people with ADHD also report suffering from anxiety symptoms. Children with anxiety disorders generally have trouble focusing in school, forget things easily, and are easily distracted.

When to Seek Support for Children With Anxiety

Anxious children are not actively seeking to give their parents a hard time. They are having a hard time and deserve support. If their anxiety is persistent and interferes with their everyday life, it may be time to seek that support.
