The Difference Between Feeling Stressed and Overwhelmed

The words “feeling stressed” and “feeling overwhelmed” are often used interchangeably, but that is not quite right as there are differences between the two. Stress is a response to specific demands or situations, while overwhelm occurs when that stress builds to the point where you feel stuck or unable to think clearly. It’s important to tell the difference between the two by recognizing the signs of each so that you know how to manage these types of emotions.

Signs of Feeling Stressed

When feeling stressed, your body and mind often send clear signals, even if you don’t notice them right away. Common signs include irritability, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, or racing thoughts. You might experience physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, an upset stomach, or fatigue. Some people may find themselves eating more or less than usual, withdrawing from others, or feeling constantly on edge. These reactions are your body’s way of telling you it’s under pressure and needs relief or balance.

Signs of Feeling Overwhelmed

Overwhelm can seem like everything is too much to handle at once. It can often be a feeling of hopelessness where you feel like no matter how hard you try, you’re powerless to do anything that’ll help. You may find it difficult to focus or make decisions, and even simple tasks can feel impossible. Emotionally, you might experience a sense of panic, helplessness, or being “shut down.” Physically, overwhelm can show up as fatigue, tension, or emotional distress, like anxiety or the inability to relax. Unlike stress, overwhelm can leave you feeling paralyzed, making it impossible to take the next step.

Taking Action to Help

Recognizing the difference between stress and overwhelm is crucial because the approach to addressing each is different. Stress can often be managed by reprioritizing tasks or taking short breaks to recharge. However, addressing overwhelm often requires a different strategy because the real issue isn’t just pressure, but overload. Your brain is in overdrive, and instead of pushing through, you need to reset.
