Sibling Rivalry or Something More? Here’s When to Seek Help

It’s completely normal for siblings to share disagreements, especially when they’re children. But in some cases, these minor arguments could be a sign that something deeper is going on. Knowing the difference can help you prevent the situation from escalating further and seek professional help when you need to.

When Sibling Rivalry Becomes Serious

Almost all siblings fight from time to time. This could be anything from fights over toys, competing for their parents’ attention, or other minor arguments that won’t go beyond a few hours at most. This type of sibling rivalry or relationship usually fades out as children mature and learn to manage their emotions.

However, there are some cases where these little fights are symptoms of a larger problem. If the fighting turns physical, there’s constant tension between them, or they can’t have a normal conversation without fighting, there may be something wrong. One or both children could be experiencing anxiety, depression, or other underlying issues that are causing them to act this way.
