When looking back on our younger years, many of us remember childhood being much less stressful and probably more fun than adulthood. As a child, almost everything is a new experience, and little things often have a significant influence on our perspective.
The truth is, childhood can be tough. Most kids aren’t naturally social butterflies, radiating confidence while excelling in every academic setting. At Suffolk Counseling Services, we offer both individual therapy and group support, helping children build emotional resilience, strengthen social skills, and feel more confident while navigating everyday challenges.
Our new weekly group therapy offering, Little People, Big Feelings, incorporates many of the ways we support children on their individual journeys.
Improved Social Skills
Children in our group learn how to connect with others in meaningful ways. From starting conversations to understanding social cues, they gain experience building friendships through guided play and group interaction. Every activity encourages collaboration, listening, and respectful communication.
Boosted Self-Confidence
With encouragement and engaging challenges, kids are given chances to try new things in a supportive setting. As they stretch beyond their comfort zones, they begin to recognize and take pride in their strengths. Each session helps them feel more sure of themselves and what they can achieve.
Healthy Emotional Expression
Children explore their emotions through creative play, storytelling, and simple role-playing. They learn how to identify what they’re feeling, put those feelings into words, and express them in ways that are safe and appropriate. Over time, they become more comfortable managing tough emotions like frustration or sadness.

Coping Strategies
Throughout the program, kids are introduced to techniques that help them stay calm and manage stress, like deep breathing, guided imagery, or positive self-talk. These tools are practiced regularly so they can become second nature in everyday situations.
Problem-Solving and Conflict Resolution Skills
Using real-world scenarios and group discussions, children learn how to handle disagreements and solve problems with others. They practice seeing different perspectives, thinking through solutions, and approaching conflict with consideration and confidence.
Enhanced Focus and Listening Skills
Games and structured routines help kids stay present and follow instructions more effectively. These activities also promote patience, organization, and improved attention, all of which can support success at school and home.

Positive Peer Relationships
Kids get to spend time with peers working through similar struggles. This shared experience creates a sense of belonging and trust. Friendships formed in the group often help children feel more confident in their social lives outside of the sessions.
Safe and Inclusive Environment
Our group setting is designed to be warm, welcoming, and judgment-free. We honor each child’s unique personality and make sure everyone feels valued and accepted. Kids are encouraged to be themselves and to grow at their own pace.
