Couples and Family Therapy are Just as Important as Individual Counseling

We’ve entered a new era of treating mental health issues and it revolves around the fact that mental health counseling is no longer confined to a one on one discussion between a counselor and a patient. Just like we have discovered that adults, teens and even young children can benefit from counseling services, we also know that sometimes better results can be achieved when couples come together or that even groups of people with the same concerns can benefit from their shared stories.

At Suffolk County Services we have continued to grow our practice because no matter the setting, we offer our clients a judgement-free place to safely express their inner emotions, their frustrations and concerns. With over 100 years of combined experience, our licensed therapists all work together to help people find happiness and alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns.

We continually investigate ways to expand the services that we offer as we learn the growing needs of the community we serve.

Each type of service has its own benefits to our clients, but whether your session is done alone, with your spouse/significant other or in a group setting, the goal is to always offer a space to share, connect and heal. The variety of assistance we offer is just one of the reasons that we are known as one of the most trusted and unique counseling services on Long Island.

“If you are feeling anxious or depressed, scared or worried, concerned for your children or yourself; we see you, we hear you, and we are here for you. This is not your fault, and you do not have to feel this way forever. There is no reason to try getting through this on your own when support is available”

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

One of the fastest growing areas of our practice is individual counseling. While it’s been a long time staple for those seeking help for their mental health issues, the fact that mental health counseling is now widely accepted in our society has empowered more people to come forward and ask for help. Our clients seek us out for a wide number of services and conditions, but the end result they are looking for is always the same. Individuals want to live the best lives possible, both mentally and emotionally.

COUPLES COUNSELING

Not long ago couples did not have any outlet to help improve their sometimes strained relationships, which then often resulted in separations or even divorce. Today, couples counseling is very common as sometimes all that is needed is learning better ways to communicate with your spouse/significant other. Many times couples will come to therapy together when a life event happens that they don’t feel they can adequately address on their own. The couple may have a loving relationship, yet are concerned the challenge they are facing is something they can’t handle on their own and want to learn the necessary skills to survive it together.

Sometimes couples come to us for counseling when one person is facing a dire issue and the other person wants to learn how to best provide support during those troubled times. Our therapists can act as an impartial sounding board and can provide the necessary tools needed to get the couple back on track. Couples therapy is crucial for couples who want to develop deeper connections so that their relationships will thrive in the future.

GROUP THERAPY

It’s an honor that so many people rely on us for Group Therapy counseling. Group therapy is not just people sitting together and talking, but instead a supportive and empathetic community where each participant shares personal stories and challenges, while coming together to connect and heal. One of the most important discoveries people make in group therapy is the fact that they are not alone. Just hearing that someone else has the same fear or hurdle to overcome can empower others to face their own issues with greater understanding and empathy towards themselves.

We are proud that we now offer the following group therapy sessions

  • Caregivers Connection
  • Little People, Big Emotions
  • Mental Health Providers (Yes, even licensed clinicians need to hear from one another!)
  • Social Anxiety Support and Skills Group
  • Substance Abuse Family Support Group
  • Thriving Together (For parents of neurodivergent kids)
  • Wiser Women (Support group for women 65+)
