No matter how much we love our children, parenting is still difficult and the complexities of today’s parenting challenges only add to its difficulty. With the increase in diagnosed mental health issues, the rise of social media, and a lack of community support, many parents are at a loss for what is best for their children.

What is Parent Coaching?

A parenting coach offers guidance and mentoring to parents and caretakers. Everyone seems to have their own set of tips and techniques pertaining to being a good parent. But a parent coach helps parents sift through that advice, enabling them to find a strategy that is in line with their core values and beliefs. At Suffolk Counseling Services, our parenting coaches are all licensed mental health providers and will never tell you what to do. By listening and responding to each client’s specific parenting issues, we help you develop an effective approach tailored to your family’s unique needs.

Some Questions To Ask Yourself:

  • Does your child/teen throw tantrums on a consistent basis?
  • Does he or she talk back and/or struggle with following directions?
  • Are you having difficulty managing your child’s aggression?
  • Does life feel like a constant battle when it comes to your child and managing life in general?
  • Are you confused about how to set healthy boundaries with your child?
  • Are you worried about your child’s ability to succeed in the future?
  • Do you feel that you are failing as a parent?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, parent coaching maybe a great way for you to get the professional education and support you need.

Parent coaching also provides parents with the opportunity to learn new skills and strategies to respond to and manage their child’s behavior more effectively. We can help you understand why your child is misbehaving and see if your parenting style is actually contributing to it.

You could compare parent coaching to adding an outside member to your family who has the ability to provide you with a unique, informed perspective. This “family member” can review your current interactions with your child, identifying the source of conflicts while giving you unbiased advice and parenting strategies that you and your child are comfortable with. During the parent coaching process, methods can be taught for improving relationships and building healthy communication between you and your child. We also provide a positive support system and can work with schools and other outside services to further help you become the parent you want to be.

Talking through your feelings with a licensed, knowledgeable professional can be extremely beneficial. At Suffolk Counseling Services, our therapists have the knowledge and skills necessary to understand what you are going through and help you attain the positive parenting results you are striving for.
